On 30th December, 1915, the Steam Ship Persia, a P&O passenger liner, was sunk  by a torpedo fired from the German submarine U-38. At the time she was to the south of Crete, in the Mediterranean and heading for India with 519 passengers and crew aboard of whom 343 were killed as she sank within 5 minutes. The sinking caused an outcry because under naval international law passenger ships could only be sunk if there was a warning and passengers and crew were put in a position of safety. This did not happen. The torpedo was fired without warning.
